Todays Tiffany Yesterdays Beginning

Today's beautiful Reproduction Tiffany Lamps, Tiffany Lighting Fixtures, and Stained Glass Window Panels, got their original beginnings in the late nineteenth century. With his start as an early day interior decorator Louis Comfort Tiffany became interested in using leaded glass windows in the homes of his wealthy clients.

Dissatisfied with the quality of most colored glass he started working with chemist to develop a finer more elegant style of vibrant colored glass. Louis Tiffany developed designs with different types of glass or with double panes that used light as the active medium in ways that up to that time were unimaginable.

As Dale Tiffany's interest in colored (stained glass) grew, he varied his designs to include windows, drinking glasses, vases, and table lamps. Louis started creating beautiful colored windows using lead and richly colored glass He would use sun-light or gaslight illuminated from behind his designs to produce scenes that would shimmer with color. Favrile Glass was a result of some of Louis Tiffany's experiments, where together with a chemist, they developed a method of injecting the color pigments directly into the glass when it was in it's molten state.

In 1878 he started the Tiffany Glass Company. In 1892, it became the Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company.Dale Tiffany's creations were not just limited to his beautiful stained glass windows or Tiffany Table Lamps. Tiffany's designs included domestic tableware in gold or deep blue iridescent glass: liqueur, claret, sherry, champagne, and water glasses; decanters; finger bowls; ice cream plates; pin trays; and salt cellars.

Through out the early 1900's his Tiffany creations won him many design awards, including Tiffany's Art Nouveau style which won him many customers, as well as more than fifty design awards, the Grand Prix and a Special Diploma at the 1902 First International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Arts in Turin, a Gold Medal at the 1904 World's Fair in Saint Louis, a Medal of Honour at the 1907 Jamestown Exposition, a Grand Prix at the 1909 Seattle Exposition, a Gold Medal at the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco, and a Gold Medal at the 1926 Philadelphia Sesquicentennial Exposition.
